Barren Plateau Detector
Gradient variance scaling in hardware-efficient ansatze
Sample random parameter initializations for hardware-efficient ansatze of varying width and depth. Compute the gradient of a local observable via the parameter-shift rule, then plot the variance on a log scale. Watch it decay exponentially with qubit count — the signature of the barren plateau phenomenon (McClean et al., 2018).
Gradient variance decays exponentially with qubit count for hardware-efficient ansatze (HEA) — the barren plateau phenomenon. Dashed line shows the exponential fit.
